6 Signs it’s Time to Get Your Garage Door Serviced

by | May 20, 2020

Just like your car, in order to keep your garage door in good condition it is important to get it serviced regularly. Regular servicing will help give your garage a long, happy life, avoid expensive repairs, and of course avoid annoying inconveniences. So when should you get your door serviced? Here are six signs that it’s time to have a specialist come and give some love to your aging garage door.

1. Unusual or Excessive Vibrations

If your garage door is starting to shake like an Aussie in the Arctic she’s definitely in need of a service. Your garage door is always going to move a little, but when it gets over the top it’s time to give us a call. Doors with excessive vibrations can weaken the integrity of the entire door structure. Even small vibrations can cause problems such as screws wiggling loose, rollers going off their tracks, and can cause much more serious long term damage.

2. New Noises

We all love a new tune every now and then, but if your garage has started creating some new, and possibly interesting sounds, it’s probably time for a service. There are many reasons your door could be screeching for attention, such as rusty parts, aging motors, uneven tension, or maybe it just needs a little bit of lubrication. Whatever the problem, we suggest it’s best to nip it in the bud to keep your door in the best condition possible.

3. She’s Starting to Show Her Age

We hate to admit it, but eventually we all start to show our age. Your garage door is a heavy lifter, and eventually you’re going to find some wear and tear on the mechanisms. Here on the Gold Coast, we tend to get a bit of rust from that sea air, or cracks in aging hinges. Take your time and check if any of the rollers look worn, cracked or chipped. Is the weather-stripping at the bottom of your door intact? Are there any loose wires, screws or bolts? Not only is it important to replace those parts, but our job is to figure out how the wear and tear got there, and stop it happening again.

4. Inconsistent or Intermittant Response to the Operner

We may love to press the snooze on our alarm, but if your garage door is responding as slowly as you do without coffee on a Monday, there might be an issue. Doors that need multiple attempts to open or close, or have an intermittent response to your door opener, are likely due for a service. It could be something as simple as a spring re-tensioning, but it could be a much larger issue.

5. Old Safety Features

At Advanced Garage Doors, your safety is our number one priority. Your garage door is the biggest moving part in your home. To give you an idea, a single door weighs 60kg, and a double door is often over 120kg!

As technology improves, our garage doors have gotten safer. Some examples of safety features include auto-reverse, a motion detector, and having back up manual controls. Let’s keep your doors’ features up to date, and your family as safe as possible.

6. Inconsistent Movement When Opening

We want your door to glide open like a knife through warm butter. If it’s pausing, shuddering, or starting to ‘stick’, have a specialist look at it. As we mentioned earlier, this could lead to more serious, long term issues, or maybe just give your car a un-wanted day off.

If you have noticed any of these issues with your door give us a call today for a free quote on your service. Let’s give your garage door a long, and problem-free life.

Safety Features Every Garage Door Needs

At Advanced Garage Doors, we love the convenience of automatic garage doors, but we also know how important it is to make sure they are safe. The CPSC’s National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) in America completed a study that found that there were 13,000 annual reported incidents associated with garage doors! The vast majority of these were due to human error, which means not only is it super important to have top-notch safety features in place, but it is also important to make sure you know them like the back of your hand.

Read on for some of our favourite safety features, that we simply would not go without.
